Seven psychoactive drugs detected in Australian wastewater for the first time

30 April 2023

Dr Richard Bade from UQ’s Queensland Alliance for Environmental Health Sciences spoke to The Guardian about research which detected new psychoactive drugs in Australian wastewater.

Researchers monitored wastewater in four Australian cities over the New Year period in 2019-20, 2020-21 and 2021-22.

Dr Richard Bade said there are many new psychoactive substances with new ones popping up every year, and there is limited knowledge of these compounds.

“For the majority of the compounds that we found, Australia is on the lower side which can probably be considered a good thing,” Dr Bade said.
