QAEHS researchers along with research partners from Neuroscience Research Australia, the Minderoo Foundation, The University of Sydney and the University of New South Wales have, in an Australian-first study, detected the presence of persistent chemicals known as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), in human brain tissue. This research, led by PhD student Marina Suzuki, shows the possibility of certain PFASs crossing the blood-brain barrier (BBB). Further research is required as the potential health effects remain uncertain at this stage.
