Identifying indoor chemical exposures and associated factors
Indoor environment quality has significant impact on human health as people typically spend 90% of their time indoors. There are various immediate sources in indoor environments emitting a complex suite of chemicals. Current key challenges for indoor pollution research include that there is a lack of criteria on how to choose homes and rooms for sampling to reflect the heterogeneous nature of the indoor environment – both inter- and intra-dwellings. The factors determining indoor chemical exposures are also poorly understood. This PhD program aims to understand what chemicals that the Australian population are exposed to from indoor environments, assess how to establish sampling criteria for indoor chemical exposure assessment and identify factors that influence such exposures including ventilation towards a changing climate.

A working knowledge of trace organic analysis using mass spectrometry techniques, passive air sampling methodology, cross-media chemical transportation modelling, and aerodynamics, particularly focusing on indoor environments would be of benefit to someone working on this project.
The applicant will demonstrate academic achievement in the field(s) of analytical chemistry; environmental science and the potential for scholastic success.
A background or knowledge of chemical transportation modelling is highly desirable.
Latest commencement date
If you are the successful candidate, you must commence by Research Quarter 2, 2024. You should apply at least 3 months prior to the research quarter commencement date.
