QAEHS in Focus shines the spotlight on QAEHS staff and students to showcase the expertise and talent within our Centre.

Why did you choose QAEHS to study with?

I discovered my passion for science and the ocean during my undergrad years. By the time I finished, I had already decided that I wanted to follow an academic career related to marine pollution. QAEHS gave me the opportunity to continue exploring and developing my passions and career through their extensive experience, mentoring and supervision, and state-of-the-art laboratories.

What is your research about?

I am currently developing a pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry method to quantify small antifouling paint particles in environmental matrices, such as marine sediments or water. This topic is very important because antifouling paints, commonly used in boats and large vessels, contain highly toxic chemicals, and could negatively impact the marine environment. My research interests are also related to plastic and microplastic pollution in the ocean.

How do QAEHS academics assist with the development of your research?

My supervisors are constantly guiding me through the process of research, encouraging me to keep going, and giving me support. Not only my supervisors, but all the people that I’ve met at QAEHS are always willing to give anyone a hand when needed. I believe that the supportive and welcoming environment at QAEHS is one of our biggest strengths.

What has been the best advice you have received about coping with the move to Brisbane?

To be curious and explore my surroundings! Brisbane has many secret spots that are suitable for any kind of person, ranging from yummy restaurants to sports clubs and national parks. If you are not very adventurous, there will always be people to tag along with and have fun discovering new places.

What is your favourite movie?

It’s hard to tell. It is definitely a sci-fi movie. Perhaps Interstellar or Contact or even the original Star Wars movies. I always had a particular interest in sci-fi.

Random fact you would like to share about yourself.

I love painting. I don’t do it often and don’t consider myself an artist, but it’s something that I want to work on in the near future.
