QAEHS ARC DECRA Fellow, Dr Richard Bade, was invited to attend and present at the recent 2024 Novel Synthetic Drug Threat Symposium in Philadelphia, USA. Dr Bade presented his work on Wastewater NPS Surveillance.
Dr Bade commented regarding the symposium, “The 2024 Novel Synthetic Drugs Threat Symposium was the only international conference held on novel psychoactive substances this year and being invited to present the work done in the wastewater space in this field was a privilege. Meeting and discussing the field with international experts in the field from policy agencies (e.g. UNODC, White House Office of National Drug Control Policy), international law enforcement agencies and research institutes was a fantastic experience and really emphasised how the work that we do can inform end users.”
The symposium, presented by The Center for Forensic Science Research & Education (CFSRE) and NPS Discovery, was 2024’s only global forum on the drug threat topic encompassing global new psychoactive substance trends, updates on the toxicology of the latest emerging drugs, laboratory approaches for early identification of new and emerging illicit substances, novel surveillance strategies for new drugs, public health harm reduction testing for NPS, and clinical and forensic expert panels reviewing the adverse effects of the newest emerging drugs.
