Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) has been widely applied to evaluate consumption of alcohol and tobacco within a population. This approach could provide near real-time and objective consumption information to complement traditional monitoring approaches. This PhD project aims to better understand alcohol and tobacco use and improve accuracy of estimation via WBE. We applied WBE to monitor long-term trend of alcohol use and further extend the approach to monitor both the use of tobacco and nicotine-containing products.
