Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is one of the most serious air pollution problems in India, particularly in the Delhi–NCR region. To effectively reduce its harmful impacts, it is important to understand what these particles are made of and where they come from.
This project focuses on studying the composition of PM2.5 in areas with high pollution levels, such as landfill sites, busy traffic intersections, and industrial zones in Delhi–NCR. A key focus will be on tiny plastic particles in the air, which are not yet well understood but may contribute significantly to air pollution and health risks.
Air samples will be collected using advanced monitoring equipment installed in a mobile laboratory developed at IIT Delhi. The collected particles will then be analyzed to identify and measure different types of plastics and other components.
The study will also use data analysis and computer-based modeling to track how these pollutants are released, move through the air, and change over time. The findings will help improve understanding of air pollution sources and support the development of more effective pollution control strategies.
