Testimonials

Katja Shimko, previous PhD studentI did my PhD at QAEHS from 2019-2022 with Professor Kevin Thomas as my principal advisor. There are so many things that I enjoyed while working here, the collaborative nature, the state-of-the-art equipment, the diversity in backgrounds and knowledge, and the high-quality research. Everyone is super approachable, flexible, and supportive, and I enjoyed being here so much that after doing my Master research project at QAEHS in 2017, I came back for a PhD. During my time here, I have been able to learn and grow so much as a person and a researcher, and while a PhD can be tough sometimes, the people at QAEHS always motivated me and provided me with words of encouragement. The advisory team can really make or break the student experience and advisors here often become mentors. I would 100% recommend QAEHS to anyone considering an MPhil or PhD.

Dr Rory Verhagen, previous Phd student

I started my PhD in January 2019 and from the first moment of my PhD journey at QAEHS I felt right at home, which was really a great feeling considering home is on the other side of the world for me (I am from the Netherlands). I was welcomed by everyone in the vibrant team that worked on innovative environmental health science and no-one was shy to teach me as a newbie all the skills that I required during my PhD. The facilities, especially the well-equipped laboratory with cutting-edge technologies at QAEHS were an enrichment of my academic experience. The mentorship I received extended beyond academia (all the way to the volleyball court where we play every Tuesday and Thursday) to my personal and professional growth. At QAEHS I felt there was no hierarchy between student, post-docs and the professors which helped with approachability and the communication between me and my advisory team. Overall, I had a great time here at QAEHS, so great that I stuck around as a Research Fellow, and I still work here with great pleasure.
