QAEHS in Focus shines the spotlight on QAEHS staff and students to showcase the expertise and talent within our Centre.
Why did you choose QAEHS to study with?
I was looking for a project-based PhD. Dr Richard Bade had a clear project summary, expertise, funding, network, as well as excellent facilities at QAEHS. I applied to many projects, and Dr Richard Bade was the first person to reply to me, just two days after the 2022 New Year. I started my PhD in October 2022 and submitted my thesis in July 2026.
What is your research about?
My project focuses on improving the analytical methods and interpretation of synthetic drugs in wastewater. Synthetic drugs were never meant for human consumption and can cause adverse health effects or even death. It is a public health threat because these compounds are produced in clandestine labs to circumvent the illegal drugs in the drug market. I identified the gaps as I worked on the PhD project and proposed some solutions to improve the quality of the results. I hope my research results will be useful to my peers and to researchers in other disciplines.
How do QAEHS academics assist with the development of your research?
A lot, both emotionally and academically. They always inspire and support me. The working environment here is very different. I can always find research fellows or academics to discuss various topics and techniques with, and I always feel welcome. I have also had the opportunity to attend and present at local and international conferences, as well as undertake a lab attachment in Germany to learn new techniques. In addition, I had the opportunity to work with and learn from industry partners.
What has been the best advice you have received about coping with the move to Brisbane?
Keep moving until you find your peaceful room, housemates, and homeowner.
What is your favourite movie?
3 Body Problem (2024). It’s a Netflix drama adapted from a book called “Remembrance of Earth's Past” by Liu Cixin. For me, the whole drama was a treat to my eyes and mind. I read the English-translated book too. I like how the writer blends the past, present, and future systematically in every plot without needing to recall past chapters. It was excellently executed in the drama with smooth transitions and beautiful cinematography.
Random fact you would like to share about yourself.
I stopped drinking tap water in 2018. I mostly drink Spring or Reverse Osmosis water from the supermarket. I prefer the neutral taste of water and have adapted to it.
