Identifying sources of contaminants of concern entering Australian sewers

ARC Linkage Project

Many harmful chemicals enter our wastewater systems every day, but we often don’t know where they come from. This makes it difficult to control pollution before it reaches treatment plants and the environment.

This project will track these chemicals back to their sources such as households or specific industries by combining advanced water sampling, chemical analysis, and mapping techniques. By comparing everyday domestic wastewater with industrial discharges, the project will identify the main contributors to pollution in sewer systems.

The results will help water utilities and regulators better manage pollution at its source, leading to cleaner water, safer recycling of waste, and improved protection of the environment and public health.

Research Impact

Provided insights to water utilities on which contaminants and sources are negatively impacting wastewater treatment plant performance, enabling more targeted management and intervention strategies.
