Wastewater-based epidemiology, when used for back-estimating chemical consumption, relies upon correction factors to account for metabolism and in-sewer transformation. These data are however often lacking. Via analysis of wastewater samples from >60% of the population during the 2016 Australian Census and comparison with sales data, correction factors for methadone and codeine were determined with minimal uncertainty.
