QAEHS researchers from HyTECH, the ARC Training Centre for Hyphenated Analytical Separation Technologies, recently attended an all-HyTECH meeting in Hobart along with researchers from the University of Tasmania and Deakin University. The QAEHS researchers, led by Prof Kevin Thomas, include Dr Cassandra Rauert, Dr Jake O’Brien, Dr Elvis Okoffo along with four commenced HDR students, Lily Pan, Tobias Hulleman, Ruvini Weerasinghe and Haitao Lin.

As part of the meeting, the HDR students provided either a presentation or poster to showcase their research. Tobias Hulleman’s presentation Non-Targeted High-Resolution Mass Spectrometric Characterisation of Highly Mobile and Highly Persistent Chemicals was awarded the Best Student Presentation while Lily Pan’s poster reporting on the Challenges in setting up a 2D in vitro cell barrier model: Assessing the permeability of nanoplastics using Pyrolysis-GC-MS was awarded the Best Student Poster.

Ruvini Weerasinghe presented on her research, the Development of specialised hyphenated methodologies for quantifying halogenated plastic materials while Haitao Lin presented his on the Characterisation and quantification of nanoplastics in the environment using pyrolysis gas chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS).

HDR student, Ruvini commented that, “the research gathering in Tasmania brought together PhD students, ECRs, and academics from University of Queensland, Deakin University, and University of Tasmania fostering a collaborative space for knowledge sharing and feedback. Discussions covered HDR project updates, research challenges, and invaluable insights from industry partners, including intellectual property rights and good and bad examples from the industry.”
