30 Apr 2021

QAEHS in Focus shines the spotlight on QAEHS staff and students to showcase the expertise and talent within our Centre.

Bastian SchulzeWhy did you choose QAEHS to study with?

My supervisor for my master’s thesis forwarded an email he got from Prof. Kevin Thomas about this position to me.

What is your research about?

Non-target analysis of (waste-)water. Instead of only investigating specific substances in water we want to look at ideally “everything” that is potentially in there – obviously that’s unfortunately not possible as of now…

How do QAEHS academics assist with the development of your research?

Everyone at QAEHS is super friendly and always very helpful. They give great input if there are any issues and, as I have a very broadly applicable field of research, a lot of people already came up with different ideas of what could be done different collaborative projects which would also help progress their own research.

Also, no matter how often I ask about where something in the lab is, as I keep forgetting about it, someone can always help with that!

What has been the best advice you have received about coping with the move to Brisbane?

Don’t calculate what the price of something here would be in your home countries currency.

What is your favourite movie?

The Lion King.

Random fact you would like to share about yourself.

I had never left Europe before I came here for my PhD.
