The What’s in Our Water conference, held from October 29-31, 2024, in Canberra, brought together a diverse group of experts and stakeholders to address critical water health issues. QAEHS researchers, Prof Kevin Thomas, Dr Elvis Okoffo and PhD students, Lily Weir, Jinglong Li and Ke Shi were amongst the conference attendees.
Lily Weir received the award for Best Student Presentation and Dr Okoffo received runner up for the Early Career Researcher (ECR) Best Presentation.
Dr Okoffo presented his research on Release of Micro- and Nano-sized Particles from Plastic Articles During Mechanical Dishwashing, while other research presentations included:
- Ke Shi presented Microplastics and nanoplastics in Australian water: characterization, sources and exposure.
- Lily Weir presented From River to Sea: Spatial Variation in Chemical Biodegradation Rates Applying a Modified OECD 309 Laboratory Experiment.
- Jinglong Li presented National Reconnaissance of Antimicrobial Occurrence in Australian Wastewater and their Socioeconomic Correlates.
Jinglong Li, PhD student, enjoyed the conference stating: “The WiOW 2024 Symposium highlighted the importance of merging Indigenous knowledge with modern science for sustainable water management. Insights on contaminants, AMR, and ecosystem health underscored a holistic approach, inspiring commitment to transdisciplinary strategies that address complex water issues and foster resilient, inclusive environmental solutions.”
