QAEHS researchers Dr Cassie Rauert, Prof Kevin Thomas, Dr Nathan Charlton and Angus Bagley along with collaborators from the Minderoo Centre – Plastics and Human Health, have developed a new extraction protocol to reduce false positives in the detection of microplastics in human blood. While further research is still required due to considerable challenges like interference and accurate detection for different types of plastics, pyrolysis–gas chromatography–mass spectrometry has significant potential for microplastic analysis in the future.
